Australia’s first Syrah to land in New Zealand has officially arrived.
The new Taylors Estate Syrah 2024 comes out of the cool-climate Adelaide Hills, and instead of the bold, heavy reds Australia is known for, this one leans lighter, fresher and more refined. Think bright raspberry and strawberry, a touch of soft spice like cinnamon and clove and a smooth, elegant finish that doesn’t try too hard.
We actually got to try it side by side with its sibling, the Taylors Estate Shiraz, and the difference is pretty clear. Same grape, totally different vibe. The Shiraz is rich and punchy with those classic dark plum and blackcurrant notes, while the Syrah feels more polished and lifted.
The Syrah really stood out. It’s got beautiful depth without being heavy, layered red berry flavours, a little warmth from spice and that kind of silky texture that makes you go back for another sip without thinking about it. It’s the kind of red that works just as well with a cheeseboard as it does with something slow cooked, which makes it very easy to bring out at pretty much any occasion.
At around $20, it’s an easy one to pick up, whether you’re curious about the Syrah style or just want something a bit lighter in your red rotation. Available now from select bottle shops nationwide, including New World South Island, Liquorland, and Super Liquor, and will be available from Foodstuffs North Island and Woolworths in May.
