From 5 to 22 March, Evanescent will transform the heart of the city into something that feels part playground, part dreamscape. The large scale immersive installation by Atelier Sisu lands as part of the Auckland Arts Festival and it is completely free to wander through.
Think oversized, luminous bubbles floating across the square. Soft curves. Shifting colour. Light that changes as the sun goes down. It has that slightly surreal quality, like stepping into a soap bubble mid air and watching the world shimmer around you.
The work draws on the fleeting magic of bubbles, that sense of wonder that lasts just a moment before it disappears. It is playful, yes, but there is something more thoughtful humming underneath. A reminder that things are fragile. Temporary. Worth pausing for.
Festival Artistic Director Bernie Haldane has seen Evanescent light up cities around the world and says it creates instant delight. “People linger, explore, laugh and inevitably start taking photos. It becomes part playground, part dreamscape. Bringing this work to Aotea Square is about creating a moment of shared wonder in the heart of the city.”
Presented with Auckland Live, Evanescent is one of the centrepiece free experiences of the festival’s 18 day programme, turning downtown Auckland into a city wide celebration of creativity.
If you are heading into town in March, allow time to wander through. It is the kind of thing that makes you feel like a kid again, and your camera roll will thank you.
