According to Expedia’s newly released 2026 Island Hot List, searches for island escapes by New Zealanders have risen by an average of 66%, as more of us look to make the most of our holiday time without committing to a massive long haul journey.
The ranking highlights 10 islands that offer everything from turquoise lagoons and luxury resorts to rich cultural experiences and incredible food, proving you don’t have to travel halfway around the world for a memorable getaway.
Leading the list is New Caledonia, followed by Vanuatu and Penang in Malaysia. Australia’s Whitsundays, Bora Bora, Jeju Island, Okinawa, Fiji, Koh Samui and the Cook Islands round out the top 10.
“New Zealand travellers are showing strong interest in island holidays that feel both accessible and rewarding, with nearby favourites like New Caledonia and Vanuatu seeing standout growth,” says Expedia Travel Expert Haley Purdon.
“For value seeking travellers looking at ways to stretch their holiday budget further, Penang, Okinawa and Jeju Island stand out as affordable island destinations with average accommodation rates under $250 per night.”
Expedia also shared a few tips for making the most of your next island escape. Travelling during the shoulder or off season can mean cheaper flights and accommodation, fewer crowds and a more relaxed experience. Choosing destinations closer to home also means less time in transit and more time on the beach, while bundling flights, accommodation, car hire and activities can help save money and simplify planning.
