Marlborough Magic: Isabel Estate’s Wild Barrique Chardonnay Crowned Wine of the Year

Marlborough has long been known for its world-class Sauvignon Blanc, but it’s a local Chardonnay that’s turning heads and stealing titles on the international stage. Isabel Estate’s Wild Barrique Chardonnay 2022 has just been named Wine of the Year at the London Wine Competition, one of the UK’s most prestigious and consumer-focused wine awards.

The win is a monumental moment for the team at Isabel Estate, who are celebrating their very first entry into the global competition. Their Wild Barrique Chardonnay not only wowed judges with its flavour and complexity, but also scored top marks for value and packaging, the full trifecta that influences what people actually pick up off the shelf.

As someone who’s tasted this wine myself, I can absolutely see why it’s made such waves. The moment I brought the glass to my nose I was hit with the most intoxicating aroma. And the taste is pure elegance. It’s bold yet balanced, rich yet refined. One of those rare wines that makes you pause after the first sip, then look around wide-eyed at anyone you’re with to most likely see the same reaction.

Chief Winemaker Jeremy McKenzie says the recognition comes at a special time, as they’re currently harvesting the 2025 vintage. “The team is blown away by the accolade,” he says. “We believe the 2025 has the bones to be another top wine in the future. There’ll certainly be a few glasses raised in celebration!”

While the 2022 vintage has earned plenty of praise since its release, including Champion Wine at the inaugural National Wine Awards of Aotearoa New Zealand, this international honour sets it apart. Judges described it as “striking,” “flinty,” and “pungent on the nose”, noting its reductive character and beautifully dark, elegant packaging.

The London Wine Competition, now in its eighth year, is unique in that it assesses wines based not just on taste, but also on value for money and shelf appeal. This year’s panel included master sommeliers, wine buyers, importers and industry experts from more than 50 countries.

Jeremy believes New Zealand Chardonnay is still one of the country’s best kept secrets, and the Wild Barrique is the perfect ambassador. “We all know that New Zealand produces globally acclaimed Sauvignon Blanc, but Chardonnay is probably the country’s best kept secret and Wild Barrique is certainly testament to that.”

Now in its 30th vintage, Isabel Estate continues to build its reputation for crafting elegant, terroir-driven Marlborough wines. And if you’re keen to taste the magic yourself, the 2023 vintage of Wild Barrique Chardonnay is available exclusively through EuroVintage.
