Reefton might be more known for being a historic gold rush town, but there’s an extra special place there that brings the past to life in the most beautiful way. The Brewer’s Night Inn is the kind of place that wraps itself around you the moment you arrive, like a warm blanket, or a glass of something strong by the fire. Getting there is also half the magic!

We drove from Christchurch over Arthur’s Pass in a white-out of snow, the kind that dusts everything in silence, and unlike anything I had ever seen before. It was an adventure just getting there, with icy peaks, quaint little towns and the kind of stillness that feels like you’ve crossed into another world. And then, Reefton. Charming, slow, a little wild, and home to one of the most unique places I’ve ever stayed.

The Brewer’s Night Inn isn’t your average stay. It’s one that’s been meticulously crafted with love, grit and a serious eye for design. Originally the home of a 19th century brewer, the Inn has been transformed into a hideaway that’s equal parts mountain cabin and curated time capsule.
From the moment you walk in, the warmth of the timber hits you. Rich, dark wood on the walls, soft yellow ceilings, and the glow of old brass and copper fittings. Everything in the space feels deliberate, from the custom-built bed and secret wardrobe to the hand-carved sinks and moody lighting.

The bathroom is a dream, especially in winter. Inspired by Japanese bathhouses, it’s clad in charred timber and features a concrete tub that easily fits two. It’s the kind of bathroom that makes you want to soak for hours, ideally with a glass of wine with the record player singing Elton John tunes – perfection.

The Brewer’s Night Inn has that rare ability to make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time, without sacrificing comfort. Layers of old wallpaper peek out from the walls, vintage newsprint is tucked into nooks, and yet there’s also lush bedding, good coffee and a fireplace. It’s romantic, nostalgic and quietly luxurious.
