Tucked into the heart of Auckland’s Britomart, Alma brings a little taste of southern Spain to the city, where open fire cooking, seasonal ingredients and warm hospitality come together in a colourful, welcoming setting.
Opened in 2020 by Jo Pearson and Natasha Parkinson, Alma takes its inspiration from Andalusia, a region in southern Spain known for its vibrant food culture and rich culinary influences. The pair have created a restaurant that celebrates the simplicity and comfort of home, with a distinctly Spanish twist.

At the heart of Alma is its open fire kitchen, where seasonal ingredients, predominantly sourced from New Zealand producers and artisans, are transformed into flavourful dishes inspired by travels abroad. Expect bold flavours, smoky finishes and a menu that evolves with the seasons.
Some menu items we think are worth trying are the crayfish tail; anchovy & tomato tostada; courgette, brown butter, egg yolk, picada; chicken liver paté; pork pinchitos; and of course you can’t go wrong with some jamon Iberico!
The drinks offering is equally considered, with Spanish wines sitting alongside New Zealand-grown Spanish varietals, an extensive selection of locally sourced gin and a collection of Spanish sherries and vermouths.

Designed by Jack McKinney Architects, the space is full of warmth and character, with colourful Andalusian-inspired tiles, natural textures and inviting outdoor seating nestled among native grasses and shady pōhutukawa. Its stunning heritage design also earned a 2022 NZIA Auckland Architecture Award.
Alma has also earned plenty of culinary recognition, including being named Specialist Restaurant of the Year at the 2026 Cuisine Good Food Awards, receiving Two Cuisine Hats. It has also secured a place in New Zealand’s MICHELIN Guide as a MICHELIN Selected restaurant, alongside previous accolades from Metro!
Meaning soul in Spanish, Alma lives up to its name.
