Cherry Blossoms Matakana

Matakana’s Cherry Blossoms Are Bursting into Spring

If cherry blossoms are your love language, it’s time to add Matakana Village to your spring road trip itinerary. While the Saturday Farmers’ Market has long been the star attraction, each spring the village is transformed into a pastel dream as its cherry trees come into bloom. A spectacle that’s still something of a local secret… and a great option if you can’t visit the insta-famous blossoms in Japan in this current financial climate!

The flowering cherry trees (Prunus awanui), planted back in 2006 by Matakana Village founders Richard and Christine Didsbury, have now matured into a breathtaking scene. Their soft blushing petals bring serenity and magic to the village streets, and are the perfect backdrop for spring walks, weekend markets and those all-important photo moments.

“Over the past few years, we’ve seen an increasing number of visitors drawn to Matakana Village in spring to enjoy the cherry blossoms,” says Richard Didsbury. “It’s a special and magical time of year that herald’s optimism and regrowth as well as being a beautiful backdrop for capturing special moments and sharing the magic.”

Thanks to the trees’ maturity, Matakana Village has earned its place on the spring floral map as one of the most enchanting spots in New Zealand to experience the fleeting cherry blossom season.

In NZ, blossoms usually begin appearing in early September, with many flowering from mid to late September through early October. The exact timing depends on weather. Cold snaps can stretch the season while warmer days or heavy rain can shorten it. Last year, Matakana’s trees unfurled in early October, with peak bloom typically lasting one to two weeks.

Local retailers and residents are already keeping a close eye on the buds. Once the trees glow pink all over, they’re usually 10 to 14 days from full bloom. When the first petals appear, it’s just a four- or five-day countdown to the full floral spectacular!

If you’re keen not to miss this beautiful sight, keep an eye on the Matakana Village Instagram for the latest updates.
